In rural Bangladesh, families rely primarily on agriculture and fishing for their daily income. Through such activities, we believe that the people of Bashati can support themselves, contribute to the nation’s economy, and remain competitive in the country’s changing economic landscape. Also, Bashati, being in the Netrokona district of Bangladesh, is renowned for their jute products and handicrafts. Although this accounts for a very small portion of the country’s economy, it is distinctive to the regional culture and a primary source for women’s employment.

We are in the process of establishing programs devoted to skills development and continual improvement as a means for program participants to acquire and expand upon their expertise. As such, our economic and employment programs are geared towards the following industries:

  • Fishing
  • Agriculture and livestock
  • Jute products and handicrafts

Fisheries

With its many rivers, Tara foundation recognizes fishing as a major source of employment and economic activity in Bashati. Through our fisheries program, we aim to provide skill development for existing fishermen and the underprivileged. Our goal is to them to bring a high degree of skill and ingenuity to their trade. Our program also emphasizes entrepreneurial spirit by teaching and improving upon business skills so that program participants can rely on their trade to maximize earnings in the long-run.

With continuous urbanization and industrialization consuming Bangladesh’s limited land area, fishing is crucial to meet the growing population’s food demand. As a result, our ongoing fisheries project not only aims to generate employment in Bashati, but to make program participants vital contributors to Bangladesh’s long-term economic growth.
